It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Thomas Yancy, who departed this world on September 24, 2025. Born in Maury City, Tennessee on January 18, 1939, he was known for being a change agent in his beloved community of Maury City and Crockett County. His unwavering kindness, strong work ethic, and a love for learning never ceased, and he carried that passion into his work and his family life.
Tony, as he was affectionately called, lived a rich life, devoted to encouraging his children and others in the community to pursue knowledge and strive for their very best. His determination and work ethic were unmatched, and he was deeply respected by his colleagues and friends.
Tony is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sarah Elizabeth; their children, Stanley, Yuri (Patti), Andre’ (Jennifer), and Pam (William); and their grandchildren, Latrease, Cedric, Marsha, Poyee’, Tanesha, Larissa, Sierra, and Victoria. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Christopher Fitzgerald Yancy.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00pm on October 4, 2025 at New First Baptist Church located in Maury City, Tennessee. Visitation will occur on October 3, 2025 from 12pm - 4pm at Affordable Funerals and Cremations, 116 Allen Ave., Jackson, TN 38305, and on October 4, 2025 from 10am - 12pm at New First Baptist Church, 394 Chester Street, Friendship, TN 38001. Interment will be at Oakview Memorial Park, located at 4258 Hwy 412 South Alamo TN 38001. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a NAACP scholarship fund or a scholarship fund or educational initiative that supports young people in pursuit of their lifelong dreams.
